Manthe Dairy, DeForest, WI

Part-time Herd Health Assistant- 3 mornings per week (M, W, F; 5am- 8 or 9am)

Monitor fresh cows for diseases related to the transition period (metritis, ketosis, milk fever, DA, mastitis, off feed, etc.).

  • Perform physical exams to diagnosis disease and treat according to farm protocol or consult with herd manager or veterinarian.

Check hospital cows and work closely with the lead milker to ensure all treatments are being completed and protocols are being followed.

Walk all milking pens and look for lame and sick cows

Check pre-weaned calves for pneumonia and/or scours and communicate any problems with herd manager and administer necessary treatments.

Walk maternity and pre-fresh pen and assist with calvings as needed.

Manage freshening and treatment records in Dairy Comp 305.

Communicate with herd manager and veterinarian any problems related to cow and calf health, worker compliance or management issues.

Weekly duties:

  • Mondays assist with herd health checks including administering shots for reproductive program and vaccinating fresh cows.
  • Manage cow movements of dry cows to pre-fresh pens
  • Assist in inventory tracking/ordering of farm supplies

Twice per month duties:

  • Manage dry off of pregnant cows
  • Manage cow movements among pens depending on stage of lactation and reproduction status (generally twice per month when dry offs are done).
  • Administer vaccinations to dry cows.

Monthly duties:

  • Once per month select cows to go to the hoof trimmer (maintenance trims of dry cows and lame cows).
  • Review monthly DHI records for potential cull cows.

 

Knowledge of cow and calf health, metabolic diseases, and treatments is required, along with the ability to administer IV and oral treatments. Knowledge of Dairy Comp 305 and general farm management is preferred.

Active CVT certification in Wisconsin, familiarity with veterinary medical nomenclature/terminology, computer literacy/data entry skill, knowledge of common drugs and protocols used in veterinary medicine and the ability to explain them and their use to the public, familiarity with equipment commonly used in veterinary clinic setting,  should have knowledge of common feline/canine illnesses and their management, must have good communication skills, must be able to keep accurate medical records and document legibly, be able to join FixaPet/CCHS in providing a positive experience and quality service and care for clients and their pets.

Perform in-clinic lab testing, patient care, administer and monitor anesthesia, dental cleanings, assist with appointments and exams, calculate dosages and administer medications and fluids, prepare and maintain surgery, exam and treatment rooms,  IV and catheter placement, perform venipuncture, oversee workflow in surgical setting, animal restraint, gather patient histories, daily patient and client care, client education, medical documentation, inventory management, equipment maintenance, communicate with clients in person and by phone.
